The pools at Maras are cut into the hillside in layers.


Water moves from one to the next. It is not still. The surface shifts continuously as it feeds each terrace.


Salt builds gradually. It collects at the edges first, then across the surface.


When handled, it is fine, dense, and compact. It holds together briefly when pressed, then separates. The crystals are not uniform. Some break immediately, others resist.


There is weight to it. More than expected for its size.


Underfoot, the surface is firm with slight give. It does not break apart easily. It holds, then releases.


The work is repetitive. Small movements. The material is moved in controlled passes, not large shifts.


In Kep, the fields are flat and open.

Water is spread across wide pans and left to evaporate. The surface dries fully under exposure.


Salt forms at the top layer.


The crystals are larger, more open, and flake-like. They separate cleanly when lifted.


When handled, it does not compress in the same way. It breaks apart easily between the fingers.


There is less resistance.


Underfoot, the surface is more brittle. It breaks and reforms with movement.


The work is more direct. The salt is collected as it forms.


Both are active systems.


In Maras, the material builds and is worked into place.


In Kep, the material forms and is removed.

Maras holds briefly, then separates.


Kep separates immediately.


The Maras salt appears denser and more compact, with smaller crystals that resist slightly before breaking. The Kep salt is more open in structure, separating more easily under minimal pressure.


This difference in structure likely influences how each salt dissolves and interacts with moisture, though this has not been measured.
